Productivity Push

Last Updated March 7, 2008 by Matt 3 Comments

Blah.  That’s pretty much where I’ve been lately. Just blah. Not sad, not happy, just blah.  And I think part of it is that I want to do so many things with my work, life, house, classes writing, whatever, and I look at the calendar and another month has gone by and I haven’t taken action on any of it.

So I’m going to try to be productive for a week.  I will:

  1. Not open an internet browser at home expect to pay bills (so no blogging for a week, which is pretty much a normal occurrence).
  2. Set a timer at work when doing internet research.  Reading blogs does not count as research.  When the timer goes off, I’m done.
  3. Reorganize and reevaluate my GTD system.
  4. Not play xbox.
  5. Not work on the website I am building for our synod. I’ve got plenty of time to finish it and actually need to wait some more before working on it. I’ve spent a lot of time on it recently and haven’t made a lot of progress.

Hopefully this will help free up some time to do things that are fulfilling, rather than just passing time.

Here’s nice prayer—I think it’s Augustine’s. I have it above my computer–and it’s a comforting reminder that everyone who seeks God’s Lordship over time has to fight and pray away distractions. Even before electricity, technology and so many hours of leisure afforded by modernity.
“Almight God…be present with me in my studies and enquiries. Grant, O Lord, that I may not lavish away the life which Thou hast given me on useless trifles, nor waste it in vain searching after things which Thou has hidden from me. Enable me, by thy Holy Spirit, so to shun sloth and negligence, that every day may discharge part of the task which Thou has allotted me; and so, further with Thy help that labor which, without Thy help, must be ineffectual, that I may obtain, in all my undertaking, such success as will most promote Thy glory, and the salvation of my own soul, for the sake of Jesus Christ, Amen.”

Matt? Matt?! Maa-aat??! I hope your productivity push didn’t involve you losing your thumbs and leaving you unable to type. That would be terrible, for then I would have to find another thinking blog to read, since all of my other daily reads involve trashing celebrities, pooping, and the trials of parenthood.

Best Youth Ministry Books: Youth Ministry 3.0 by Mark Ostreicher

Yesterday I finally read Youth Ministry 3.0 by Mark Ostreicher, and since I’m one of the latecomers to the conversation I won’t summarize the book too much. Marko has linked to tons of reviews on his blog if you are interested in more in-depth summaries. If you are fairly in-tune with a lot of the […]

Best Youth Ministry Books: Postmodern Youth Ministry

Postmodern Youth Ministry by Tony Jones is the book I would recommend to youth ministers if they could just read one youth ministry book. I first read the book in my Foundations and Practices of Youth Ministry class at John Brown University. After the preface to the book there is a page titled, “The Day […]
